Statement

A shirt leaves a wardrobe. Its fibers become paper. An artist gives it another form, and it returns to the neighborhood as a work of art.

RE:SHAPE brings together clothes collected around Shibuya and Jingumae, papermaking in Kochi, and six artists working across different media. Led by UDS HOTELS and all day place shibuya, the project transforms clothing into washi with the help of Morishika. Traces of color and fiber remain in the paper, carrying something of each garment into its next life.

Taking “SHAPE” as its theme, the exhibition invites us to reconsider the value and possibilities of everyday things as they change from clothes to paper to art. Dan Isomura, Nori Okawa, Kenta Cobayashi, Dian, CHiNPAN and Ⓛ respond to this shared material in their own ways. Twenty or more works will be shown in Jinny Street Gallery’s streetlamp display cases from November 1 to 30.

Part of the artwork sales is intended to return to Shibuya, continuing the circulation of the neighborhood’s resources in a new form.

Clothes were collected with all day place shibuya, NININI·NI, Kosugiyu Harajuku, SOMSOC Gallery, HATTO COFFEE and FREITAG Store Tokyo Shibuya. The collection has now ended; the clothes begin their next chapter here.

Workshops, a talk and an artist-led walk offer other ways to encounter RE:SHAPE during November. See the events programme below and the official Instagram for updates.
