写真にはどんな意味があるのでしょうか？
少なくとも、それはある特定の瞬間を記録した参照点です。撮影されたその瞬間、そして写し出されたその瞬間――写真はその時間に結びついています。
とりわけ家族写真は、私たちの個人的な歴史と結びつくものであり、「自分が誰で、どこから来たのか」ということを示す記録（アーカイブ）です。
それらは「IMAGINED IMAGES」として存在し、たとえ私たちの記憶が曖昧になっても、そこから人生の出来事の確かさを何度でも引き出すことができるのです。す。

What is the use of a photograph? If nothing else, it’s a reference point to a specific moment in time, the moment of its creation, the moment it depicts. Especially family photographs are a tie to our personal history, an archive of who we are and where we came from. They are “memory deposits” from where we keep sourcing the certainty of our life events even if our memories of them are lost.

オープニングナイト
「IMAGINED IMAGES」のオープニングイベントは、2025年10月25日18:30からJinny Street Galleryに隣接するアートスペース＆バー「NININI」（東京都渋谷区神宮前2丁目3-23）で開催されます。
Imagined Images is a series of Al-generated images that I created to reconstruct my family photo album which is missing. Due to the numerous relocations of my ancestors, sometimes forcibly and others at will, the photographs that documented the events of their lives were lost along the way. Using my family’s narratives as prompts, I created images that don't truly belong to me, but could represent anyone's story. Family albums typically highlight happy moments—celebrations and milestones—while hardships are left unphotographed, as if to be forgotten. Trying to reconcile with my family history, one of displacement, loss and deprivation I visualized moments that happened, moments I imagined, moments I was told about, moments I have hoped to happen, moments that never happened.
IMAGINED IMAGES は、失われた家族の写真アルバムを再構築するために制作した、AI生成によるイメージのシリーズです。私の家族は、代々、時には自らの意思で、時には強制的に、幾度となく移動を繰り返してきました。その過程で、彼らの人生の出来事を記録していた写真の多くが失われてしまいました。
私は家族から語り継がれた物語をもとに、写真を生成しました。それらのイメージは、本当の意味で私自身のものではないかもしれませんが、誰の物語にもなり得るものです。多くの家族アルバムがそうであるように、そこに写っているのは祝いごとや節目など、幸せな瞬間ばかりであり、困難や悲しみは記録されず、まるで忘れ去られたかのようです。
移動と喪失、そして欠乏によって形作られてきた家族の歴史と向き合うために、私はさまざまな「瞬間」を可視化しようと試みました。実際に起こった瞬間、想像した瞬間、語り聞かされた瞬間、起きてほしいと願った瞬間、そして決して起こらなかった瞬間までも。
But what is the use of this new kind of images since they lose their fundamental tie to reality? What is the memory they hold? To whom are they precious, heirlooms that must be preserved? Unexpectedly, that process of creating this series of images was not only emotional but also informative and even therapeutic.
In a time when war conflicts, refugee flows and right-wing ideology are on the rise I couldn't help but wonder what would it mean for one to be able to rewrite his life story through images that might soon be indistinguishable from real photos.
しかし、現実との根源的なつながりを失ったこれらの新しい「写真」には、果たしてどんな意味があるのでしょうか？
彼らはどんな記憶を宿しているのでしょう？
そして、誰がこのイメージたちを、大切に受け継ぐべき家宝のように思ってくれるのでしょうか？
意外なことに、このシリーズを制作する過程は、感情的であるだけでなく、学びの多い、そしてどこか癒やしのような体験でもありました。
戦争や難民の流出、そして右派的な思想が再び力を持ち始めているこの時代において、
「現実の写真と見分けがつかなくなるかもしれない画像によって、自分の人生の物語を"書き換える"とはどういうことなのか？」
私は、そう考えずにはいられませんでした。
About MARIA MAVRAPOLOU
Maria Mavropoulou (b. 1989) is a visual artist based in Athens, Greece.
Working primarily with photography, her practice expands into new forms of photographic imagery, including VR, screen captures, GAN-generated visuals, and AI-created images.
Her work explores the evolving realities shaped by connected devices, with a focus on the tensions between physical and virtual space and the impact of technological mediation. Using the most advanced tools available to her, Maria reflects on how images are produced today, while delving into themes such as digital identity and representation in the post-social media era, algorithmic bias, network culture, the shifting power dynamics between humans and machines, and the layered, hybrid nature of our constantly connected experience.
In her recent projects, she draws parallels between artificial intelligence and notions of the mystical, the divine, and the magical—contemplating the future of photography in an age defined by synthetic imagery.

MARIA MAVRAPOLOU（1989年生まれ）は、ギリシャ・アテネを拠点に活動するビジュアル・アーティストです。
主に写真を基盤としながら、VR（バーチャルリアリティ）やスクリーンショット、GAN（敵対的生成ネットワーク）による画像、AI生成画像など、新しい写真表現の形へと実践を広げています。
彼女の作品は、接続されたデジタル機器によって形作られる新たな現実や、私たちが生きる物理空間と仮想空間とのあいだに生まれる緊張関係、そしてテクノロジーを介した経験の在り方を探求しています。最先端の技術を用いて、現代におけるイメージの生成方法を問い直しながら、ポストSNS時代のデジタル・アイデンティティと自己表象、アルゴリズムのバイアスやネットワーク文化、人間と機械のあいだで揺れ動く権力関係、そして常時接続された世界における重層的でハイブリッドな経験の在り方といったテーマを掘り下げています。
近年のプロジェクトでは、人工知能と神秘性、宗教的概念、そして魔術的なイメージとの共鳴に着目し、合成画像が台頭する時代における「写真の未来」について思索を深めています。
