Jinny Street Gallery is a walking open-air gallery in the Jingumae 2-chome neighborhood, close to the busy streets of Harajuku. Easy to explore on foot, Jinny offers a glimpse into everyday local life, making it the perfect place to slow down, enjoy a colorful, artistic neighborhood, and discover the stories that unfold in our quiet streets.

For Notes from Jinny, selected artists and creators will be invited to wander through our neighborhood and capture their impressions through sketches, thoughts, and observations. Each diary page becomes a personal mood board inspired by our Jinny streets.

Walk through our Jinny neighborhood, collect your Jinny sketches and thoughts, and exhibit them at Jinny Street Gallery!

Jinny Street Galleryは、原宿の賑やかな通りからほど近い神宮前2丁目エリアに広がる、街全体を舞台にした屋外型のアートプロジェクトです。徒歩で散策しながら作品や風景に出会うことができ、日常の中にひそむ小さな表現や物語を発見できる場所です。

「Notes from Jinny」では、選ばれたアーティストやクリエイターの皆さまに、この街を自由に歩きながら、スケッチや思考の断片、気づきや観察を通して、それぞれの視点を記録していただきます。ノートの1ページ1ページが、Jinnyから得たインスピレーションをもとにした、あなただけのムードボードとなります。

Eligibility

This open call welcomes illustrators and creators of all experience levels, from amateurs to professionals, who reside in Japan or can join us in our neighborhood throughout the month of August. Deadline is
July 27st and participation is free of charge

Who can participate

and how?

Theme

The theme of "Notes from Jinny" is to wander through our Jinny neighborhood and capture the stories, scenes, and moments you discover. Draw, write, sketch, or create anything that catches your eye or sparks your imagination in the official “Jinny notebook” that we will provide. The creation period will run from August 1st to August 31st

Selection Criteria

We will select a maximum of 42 artists. We will valuate your submissions portfolios and materials and make a selections considering delivery style, creativity in approach, storytelling capabilities.

Exhibition

The exhibition will be held at Jinny Street Gallery from September 1st to 30th. Prior to the exhibition, we will collect your notebook and display a selection of its pages in our Jinny display cases. A detailed schedule can be found at the bottom of this page.

日本在住で、8月中にJinnyの近隣エリアで活動できる方であれば、アマチュア・プロを問わず、イラストレーターやクリエイターなど、経験を問わずどなたでもご応募いただけます。

「Notes from Jinny」のテーマは、Jinnyのまちを自由に歩きながら、そこで出会った風景や物語、心に残った瞬間を記録することです。

お渡しする公式 「Jinny Notebook」 に、目に留まったものや想像力をかき立てられたものを、イラスト、スケッチ、文章など、お好きな方法で自由に表現してください。制作期間は8月1日から8月31日までになります

選考基準

展示参加アーティストは最大42名を選出します。

ご提出いただいたポートフォリオおよび作品をもとに、表現のスタイル、アプローチの独創性、そしてストーリーテリングの力などを総合的に評価し、選出いたします。

展示について

展示会は9月1日から30日までJinny Street Galleryにて開催いたします。

展示会に先立ち、皆さまのノートをお預かりし、その中から数ページを選んでJinnyの展示ケース内で展示いたします。

Jingumae Ni-chome is a quiet neighborhood tucked just behind the bustling streets of Harajuku, Shibuya.

Walking through Jingumae-nichome feels like stepping into a close-knit community where people are friendly, familiar, and know one another.  

It’s a calm and welcoming place to stroll, connect, and feel at ease.

 

神宮前2丁目は、渋谷・原宿の賑やかな通りのすぐ裏にある、落ち着いた静かな街。

神宮前2丁目を歩くと、まるで人々が顔なじみで互いに親しみを持つ、緊密なコミュニティに足を踏み入れたかのように感じられます。

穏やかで居心地の良い街並みは、ゆったり散歩をしたり、人とつながったり、心を落ち着けたりするのに最適な場所です。

Should I sketch? Write? Both?

Jinny is full of hidden spots and quiet stories unfolding around every lamppost in the shopping district. The area is constantly shifting with color and light throughout the day.

The selected artists are invited to capture these small moments in the neighborhood and document them in their own creative way, while walking through our streets

This could be through sketches, written fragments, or a combination of both, drawings accompanied by short texts or notes.

You are free to use any materials you like. Collage, mixed media, watercolor or any other approach is also welcome.

What matters most is finding the way that best expresses in your unique way your Jinny story.

Jinnyには、商店街の街灯のまわりをはじめとして、あちこちに隠れた場所や小さな物語が息づいています。街は一日を通して色や表情を変えながら、さまざまな瞬間を見せてくれます。

選ばれたアーティストの皆さまには、この街で出会うささやかながらも印象的な瞬間を、それぞれの自由な方法で記録していただきます。

スケッチでも、テキストによる断片的なメモでも、あるいはその両方を組み合わせた表現でも構いません。絵に短い文章を添える形など、自由に表現してください。

使用する画材や手法に制限はありません。コラージュやミクストメディアなど、どのような方法でも歓迎します。

大切なのは、あなた自身の視点でJinnyの物語をどのように表現するかです。

Project guidelines in detail

  1. Submission Process

    To submit your work, please complete the form in this page and follow the instructions.

    We won’t accept JPG submissions, but PDF of your portfolio.
    You could in case just share your website or artist instagram profile ( don’t send your personal one if it doesn’t contain any material we can refer to)

  2. Deadline
    The deadline for submissions is July 27th. Submissions must be received on time to be considered.

  3. Submission Costs & Rewards

    There are no submission fees for this open call.

    Selected artists will receive the official Jinny Notebook for free.（currently under production)

    This notebook will serve as the physical base for the project and will be used throughout the creation and exhibition process.

  4. Theme

    The theme of “Notes from Jinny” is an invitation to wander through the Jinny neighborhood and observe the small stories unfolding within it.

    Participants are encouraged to explore the streets of Jingumae 2-chome, near Harajuku in Tokyo, and respond to what they encounter through images, sketches, writing, or any form of visual note-taking.

    The focus is not on a single medium, but on attention, observation, and personal interpretation of place.

    Walking is used as a method of observation rather than a subject to be represented. What matters is not the street itself, but how it is noticed, remembered, and translated through movement.

    Each contribution becomes a page in a personal “Jinny notebook”, a collection of impressions, fragments, and visual notes shaped by walking, looking, and remembering.

  5. Selection Process

    The curators of Jinny Street Gallery will review all submissions based on:

    • Creativity and originality of approach

    • Sensitivity to observation and storytelling

    • Ability to translate experience into visual or narrative form

    • Overall resonance with the spirit of the project

    A maximum of 42 artists will be selected.

    Selected participants will be invited to contribute to the “Notes from Jinny” exhibition, installed throughout the Jinny Street Gallery in the neighborhood of Shibuya.

  6. Schedule & Workflow

    After selection, artists will be invited to the Jinny Street Gallery area to pick up their official Jinny Notebook during the first week of August.

    The creation period will run from August 1st to August 31st, during which participants will develop their notebooks through walking, observation, and personal documentation in the Jinagawa / Jingumae neighborhood.

    At the end of the creation period:

    • Selected pages will be scanned by Jinny Street Gallery

    • One main page per artist will be chosen for exhibition

    • Additional scanned pages may be used as background or secondary material inside the display cases (not directly visible, placed underneath)

    • Display notes will be prepared so pages can be directly installed inside the exhibition cases

    The original Jinny Notebooks will be returned to artists after the exhibition, included within the exhibition set.

    The exhibition setup will follow the creation period, leading into the opening event.

  7. Exhibition

    Selected works will be featured in “Notes from Jinny”, held at Jinny Street Gallery from:

    September 1st – September 30th

    The exhibition will take place across the 42 street lamp display cases of Jinny Street Gallery in Jingumae 2-chome.

    Each selected artist will be represented through:

    • One main notebook page displayed in a dedicated case

    • Additional scanned fragments integrated into the visual composition of the display

  8. Notification

    Only selected participants will be notified via email.

    Non-selected applicants will not be contacted.

    Further instructions regarding notebook pickup and participation will be shared directly with selected artists.

    No portfolio feedback will be provided.

  9. Usage Rights

    By submitting your work, you grant Jinny Street Gallery the non-exclusive right to reproduce, distribute, and display submitted materials for exhibition and promotional purposes.

    Copyright remains fully with the artists.

  10. Important Notes

    このノートブックは、本プロジェクトの制作および展示期間を通して使用されます。

  4. テーマ

    “Notes from Jinny” は、Jinnyの街を自由に歩きながら、その中に潜む小さな物語や気配を観察するための招待です。

    参加者は、神宮前2丁目や原宿周辺（東京）を歩きながら、そこで出会う風景や出来事に対して、写真・スケッチ・文章・ドローイングなど、自由な形式で応答してください。

    本プロジェクトでは特定の表現手法は問いませんが、「注意深く見ること」「観察すること」を重視します。

    「歩くこと」は対象ではなく観察のための方法として扱われます。
    街そのものを描くのではなく、歩くことで何が見え、どのように記憶され、どのように解釈されるかが重要です。

    すべての応募作品は、それぞれの“Jinnyノートブック”の1ページとなり、歩行・観察・記録の積み重ねとして構成されます。

  5. 選考について

    Jinny Street Galleryのキュレーターが、以下の観点から応募作品を審査します：

    • 創造性・独自性

    • 観察力・ストーリーテリング性

    • 経験を視覚・言語へ変換する力

    • プロジェクトの世界観との親和性

    最大で 42名のアーティスト を選出します。

    選出された参加者は、神宮前2丁目に展開されるJinny Street Galleryにて開催される “Notes from Jinny” 展覧会 に参加いただきます。

  6. スケジュール・制作の流れ

    選出後、参加者は8月第1週にJinny Street Gallery周辺にて公式 Jinny Notebook を受け取ります。

    制作期間は 8月1日〜8月31日 です。この期間中、参加者は神宮前2丁目エリアを自由に歩きながら、観察・記録・制作を行います。

    制作期間終了後：

    • ノートブック内のページをすべてスキャン

    • 各アーティストにつき1ページをメイン展示として選出

    • その他のスキャンデータは展示ケース内の下層または背景として使用（直接見えない形）

    • 展示用に各ページをケース内へ設置できるよう準備

    展示終了後、Jinny Notebookの原本はアーティストへ返却されます（展示セットとして返却）。

  7. 展示について

    本展覧会 “Notes from Jinny” は以下の期間で開催されます：

    9月1日〜9月30日

    展示は神宮前2丁目に設置されたJinny Street Galleryの42基の街灯型ケース全体で行われます。

    各選出アーティストは以下の形式で紹介されます：

    • ノートブックのメインページ1点の展示

    • 補助的なスキャン画像による空間構成

  8. 結果通知

    選出された方のみにメールでご連絡いたします。

    不採用の方への個別連絡は行いません。

    ノートブック受け取りや制作に関する詳細は、選出者へ直接ご案内いたします。

    なお、選考に関するフィードバックは行いません。

  9. 使用権について

    応募作品の提出により、応募者はJinny Street Galleryに対し、展示および広報目的で作品を非独占的に使用（複製・展示・配布）する権利を許諾するものとします。

    著作権はすべて制作者に帰属します。

  10. 注意事項

    応募作品は審査に支障がないよう、正確かつ明確に整理された状態でご提出ください。

    応募をもって、本募集要項の内容に同意いただいたものとみなします。
