“These sketches are visual documentation of Jingumae's door handles that turned into a mild case of affordance study.
Coming to Jingumae after work to sketch, many stores' lights were off and I was faced with more closed doors than open ones. I began collecting door handle sketches of places that were closed and ended up sketching all of the door handles I could see. They then expanded into existential questions about door handles and their relativity to those who own them, hold them, and let go of them.
This thought process reminded me of James G. Gibson's theory of affordance that describes what an environment or object offers an animal or human based on their physical abilities. In this case, a door handle affords grasping. I believe that this study will not help me learn the definition of door handles but instead the metaphor of door handles.
As I move on with this perspective beyond "Notes from Jinny", my next targets are door stoppers.
「Notes from Jinny」 “
