Instinct, Imperfection and the Dialogue Between Soft and Hard in Onree’s ceramics
From 1st of October to 27th of October 2026, 42 exclusive ceramic works by Onree will be presented throughout Jinny Street Gallery, open air art space in the shopping district Jingumae 2-chome, Shibuya.
The exhibition invites visitors to encounter ceramics not as perfectly controlled objects, but as records of touch, movement and instinct. Join the tile making workshop by Onree on October 12th as part of the exhibition

2026年10月1日（木）から10月26日（月）まで、東京・渋谷区神宮前2丁目の商店街にあるオープンエアのアートスペース、Jinny Street Galleryにて、Onreeによる42点の新作・限定作品を展示します。
本展では、陶器を「完成された、完璧にコントロールされたオブジェ」としてではなく、触れること、動くこと、そして本能的な身振りが刻まれた記録として捉えます。
また、展示期間中の10月12日（月・祝）には、Onree本人によるタイル制作ワークショップも開催します。

Workshop / ワークショップ
As part of the exhibition, Onree will host a hands-on ceramic tile-making workshop for the local community of Jingumae 2-chome on October 12, 2026, during the Jingumae 2-chome local matsuri, the people design street.
Participants will work directly with clay to create their own ceramic tiles, using stamps, tools and everyday objects to leave marks and textures on the surface.

In “Memory Foam” all gestures become a memories
When creating Memory Foam and throughout his practice, Onree focuses on a simple question: what happens when an artist stops trying to control the final form of a ceramic object?
Rather than beginning with a predetermined shape, Onree allows the material and the body to lead the process. Touching, bending, pressing, pinching and attaching become intuitive gestures through which each vessel gradually takes shape. The clay receives every movement, the pressure of a fingertip, the force of a hand, a deformation or an unexpected mark.
Once fired, these temporary gestures become permanent. What was once soft and responsive becomes hard ceramic, preserving a fleeting physical action as a lasting memory.
For Onree, irregularities, distortions and imperfections are not mistakes to be corrected, but traces of the moment in which the work was created, a physical record of feeling, movement and thought. For these reasons his vessels feel very very tactile and unpredictable. In Memory Foam, those are more than a mere object. Onree's vessels become a memory of his body.

「Memory Foam」をはじめとするOnreeの制作には、ひとつのシンプルな問いがあります。もし、陶の最終的なかたちをコントロールしようとすることをやめたら、何が起こるのか？
あらかじめ決められた形を目指すのではなく、作家Onreeは素材と身体の動きに導かれながら制作します。
触れる、曲げる、押す、つまむ、付ける。
そうした直感的な動作のひとつひとつを通して、器は少しずつ姿を現していきます。指先の圧力、手の力、偶然生まれた変形や思いがけない痕跡。そのすべてを粘土は受け止めます。そして、焼成によって一瞬の出来事だった身振りは、永続するものへと変わります。
かつては柔らかく、自在に反応していた粘土が、硬質な陶へと変化し、その瞬間に生まれた身体の動きを「記憶」として留めるのです。
Onreeにとって、歪みや不均衡、いわゆる「不完全さ」は、修正すべき失敗ではありません。それらは作品が生まれた瞬間の痕跡であり、感覚や動き、思考を物質として記録するものです。
そのため、Onreeの器には強い触覚性があり、予測できない表情が生まれます。
「Memory Foam」において、作品は単なる「物」ではありません。Onreeの身体が残した記憶そのものなのです。

Come drink Japanese Sake in Onree’s Ochoko in Jingumae 2-chome
During the exhibition period, you can enjoy Japanese sake at (shop name), served in a limited-edition ochoko (sake cup) created by artist Onree exclusively for Memory Foam.
Onree has had a deep connection with Japan for many years and has lived in Japan for an extended period of time. This special ochoko was created from Onree’s unique perspective as an artist with a deep appreciation for Japanese culture.
Throughout the exhibition period, guests who order Japanese sake at (shop name) will be served their sake in an ochoko made by Onree and will also receive an information card introducing the artwork.
When you visit the exhibition, be sure to stop by (shop name) in the shopping district and experience the ochoko for yourself. The ochoko will also be available for purchase in the shop.

About Onree
Onree is a ceramic and mixed-media artist specialising in contemporary ceramics.
With more than seven years of experience working with ceramics, Onree combines contemporary approaches with traditional ceramic techniques, exploring the relationship between material, gesture and form.
Originally from New York, Onree moved to Japan four years ago and is currently based in Portugal, where the artist works at the tile studio Oficina Vidra.
Through an instinctive approach to clay, Onree creates works that embrace irregularity, materiality and the unexpected.

Onreeは、現代陶芸を中心に活動するセラミック・ミクストメディアアーティストです。7年以上の陶芸経験をもとに、伝統的な技法と現代的なアプローチを組み合わせ、素材・動き・形の関係を探求しています。
ニューヨーク出身で、現在はポルトガルを拠点に活動し、タイル工房「Oficina Vidra」で制作しています。土の持つ偶然性や不規則さを受け入れながら、素材の質感と予期せぬ変化を生かした作品を制作しています。
